The Side Effects of Worship

Inflammatory bowel disease, ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s disease, depression and other psychiatric disorders, increased risk of suicide, birth defects, hair loss, arthritis, and kidney stones…these are just a few of the side effects you could experience, and this is just for taking medicine for ACNE!

No one would take a prescription just to GET the side effects, especially when some of the side effects could be paralysis, kidney failure or death. It would be utter madness to take something that is known to cause such things. However, what if the side effects to every prescription were GOOD?

Such is the case with the Word of God, the Scriptures. There are very real treatments for just about every problem we may encounter in this life, and they are found in the Bible. But wait, there’s more, the side effects to God’s solutions are wonderful!

The spirit of Heaviness

Let’s take depression (aka, the spirit of heaviness) for example. The preSCRIPTURE for depression could be found in Isaiah 61:3 which says, “To appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness…” If we would “put on” the garment of praise, that is, begin to vocally praise Jesus, immediately, or eventually, the spirit of heaviness would not only be gone from us, but we would receive the side effects of praise: peace, joy, and hope in the Lord.

Another great preSCRIPTURE for depression, and one of my personal favorites, is found in Lamentations 3:21-23, “This I recall to my mind, therefore I have hope. The LORD’S lovingkindnesses indeed never cease, for His compassions never fail. They are new every morning; Great is Your faithfulness.” So, we see here that if we will recall to mind (through memorization and declaration) the fact that our God loves us unceasingly, even when everyone else seems to have abandoned us, not only will the spirit of heaviness be lifted, but we will also experience the side effect of recalling to mind: HOPE! Instead of an increased risk of suicide, (a side effect of many anti-depressants), the Word of God will bring a renewed sense of life and faith that HE is able to get us through anything. He is holding us in His very arms of love, and He will NEVER let us go. Doesn’t it feel good to have faith in the faithful One?

Here are a few more Scriptures to help you with the spirit of heaviness: Deuteronomy 31:8, Deuteronomy 33:27, Psalm 9:9, 27:14, 31:22, 24, Isaiah 35:10, Romans 15:13, and more.

Stress & Anxiety

In a world where being stressed out is almost the norm, people are desperately searching for peace and rest. Sometimes folks take pills to sleep and other pills to stay awake. It’s a vicious cycle that can be broken and healed by a preScripture from God.

✴PreScripture: Isaiah 26:3
Keeping our minds stayed or focused on God ✴Side Effect: perfect peace
✴PreScripture: Matt. 11:28 Come to Jesus ✴Side Effect: REST
✴PreScripture: Phil. 4:6-7
Taking our anxieties to Jesus in prayer. ✴Side Effect: an incomprehensible peace that guards our hearts and minds in Jesus!

…And the list goes on. Everything we need is truly found right in the Word of God.

The Side Effects of Worship

Finally, let’s talk about worship. When we praise and worship the Lord in word or in song, the result is the PRESENCE of GOD! That’s right, God comes directly into the midst of people who praise Him! This truth is found tucked in the beginning of Psalm 22. This Psalm is a prophetic look at Jesus’ suffering on the cross, and it’s also a song of suffering and praise by the Psalmist. He is praising God in the midst of tremendous distress and God is drawn in by that worship to inhabit the very presence of the worshiper. WOW! God’s actual presence, the King of kings, the Lord of all lords, the Creator of all things comes to be with us when we praise Him! I am personally overwhelmed by that thought right now. Whether I am alone or in a group of people, when I praise Him, He is inhabiting that praise! The result of our praise is God’s presence, but the side effects of God’s presence on us are endless. When He comes in His power and His glory, we can experience His love, deliverance, healing, salvation, grace, JOY, peace, lasting freedom, rest…. Like I said, the list is endless.

We don’t worship God for the side effects, but our God is such an awesome God that He wants to bless us in the most extravagant ways. When we come to Him for the cure, we not only get loosed of the bondage, but we get the side effects too!

The side effects of worship…side effects we can abundantly live with!
