A Baby on the Way!
My Daughter-in-Law is pregnant with her first child. I guess you can just call me “Granny D.”
Showers of Blessing
With the first child, new parents really want to be ready for everything. Once they find out the gender of the baby, they might start by preparing the baby’s room. One of the “soon-to-be” Mom’s friends will probably throw a baby shower where the new parents will be lavished with many of the things their baby will need such as: diapers, bottles, bibs, clothing, a playpen-the list can go on. Baby showers are great ways to show support to the expectant parents. The guests at the shower could include relatives, friends who are traditionally women, but there is no law that says guys can’t come. Actually, my husband and some couples were at our first baby’s shower.
Prep Time & Signs
As with all living things, there is a time of preparation. As the fruit grows there are indications as to when it will be ripe. The fruit gets bigger, changes color, and when it is ripe, it may even fall off the tree. Thankfully, God has given us about nine months in which to prepare for a baby.
Understandably, my Daughter-In-Law is a little nervous about being prepared for her first baby. But she and my son have their house in order, and everything is ready, including the baby’s room. They also have a bag packed and set by the door so that they can grab it as they go to the hospital at the first sign of labor. Many new parents-to-be are worried that they won’t be able to get to the hospital in time. The truth is, labor can take hours, with the pain slowly intensifying over time, but the actual birth takes only minutes.
New Baby or the End of the Age?
Jesus likened the end of the age to a woman in childbirth, “As He was sitting on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to Him privately, saying, ‘Tell us, when will these things happen, and what will be the sign of Your coming, and of the end of the age?’ And Jesus answered and said to them, ‘See to it that no one misleads you. For many will come in My name, saying, ‘I am the Christ,’ and will mislead many. You will be hearing of wars and rumors of wars. See that you are not frightened, for those things must take place, but that is not yet the end. For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom, and in various places, there will be famines and earthquakes. But all these things are merely the beginning of birth pangs.’” (Matthew 24:3-9)
Clearly, there are many similarities between the end of the age and a woman in labor. The question for each of us is, are we prepared? Are we taking this valuable time to get ready for what’s coming?
The End is Near
Jesus gives us the signs of His coming in the Bible. It’s true, no one knows the day or the hour of His coming, any more than one can know the exact day or hour of the birth of a child, but we can see the signs. We can expect a baby in nine months, and according to Jesus’ own words, we can expect Him to come (for believers) soon after we see and feel these labor pains increasing.
